 In the beginning there were just humans. The two gods of light and dark had created them: a perfect balance of good and evil. The lands were ruled in perfect harmony, a balance that tipped to neither side. Not right away. Slowly the humans became more corrupt. Cities and castles were built. Soon there were rulers, emperors, who would claim to be hand chosen by the gods and, eventually, descendants of the gods.
Neither Shikyo, god of Darkness, nor Kibou, goddess of Light, took to this nicely. Shikyo wanted to punish them and Kibou wanted to teach them. The two fought and bickered and Shikyo created a race of powerful creatures known as demons. Created by the Dark god, they were mostly evil and tormented the humans. Kibou began to make the lands pure again, but Shikyo was darkening the lands at the same time. Soon there were three territories: Shikyo's of the Dark, Kibou's of the Light, and the neutral lands where their magic clashed. Demons took over Shikyo's lands and humans remained safe in Kibou's, for the most part.
This wasn't the end of it. The demons and the humans fought constantly. Demons were stronger, but their were more humans. Back and forth they went. The gods picked sides, tried to manipulate things in their favor, but neither succeeded. Eventually they both just stepped out, never to bother in the affairs of demons or humans again.
The struggle continued for years. Decades. Centuries. Dark and Light continue to clash. Demons versus humans. Hanyous have been appearing, half demon-half human creatures. Hated by both races and so few they don't even make up a full percent of the population. The creatures are caught in between, normally taking neither side. Neither may take them.
Now there is something new. The Emperor of Shikyo has been able to absorb the souls of other beings and, with this power, has opened the gates of Hell. Shinigamis now kneel before him and the Kibou Empress worries about her own kingdom. His power is not complete yet and the Emperor searches for pure souls to finish the job and open hell to his biding. With that power he could rule the entire land and hold the power of the gods.
Times are harder than ever. The war rages on, dark and light clashing together. Peace seems to be a fairytale. Those caught in between are either killed or force to a side. No one seems safe. Hope is dwindling.
